US Market for Biogas: Incentives and market drivers

27. februar 2020

Head of Waste, Recycling & Biogas Advisory Chris Voell, from the Danish Trade Council shared his insights into the American biogas market during Danish Export Association - Bioenergy networking day, which was held at Nature Energy’s headquarters in Odense Wednesday 25th of February.

Key take aways, trends and market drivers for biogas include:

  • Large potential for food waste plants, yet currently very few food waste alone plants operating
  • Policy incentive strong for vehicle fuel now and in the foreseeable future
  • Food waste away from landfills: State leadership on organic diversion incentivizes food waste digesters
  • Massive build out in California in the dairy sector but mainly using low tech lagoons
  • Low energy prices in many parts of the country
  • Starting to see a professionalization in the industry: When it comes to volume of projects and sophistication of technologies/business models)

The Low Carbon Fuel Standard California incentive program aiming at reducing the carbon intensity of transportation fuels sold in the state by 10% by 2020, is expected to be copied by other states and creating better conditions for biogas production in the US.
